Kapadokya at a glance

After a transfer in Izmir, we made it to Goreme, in Kapadokya Turkey late last night. From the Kayseri airport, we were picked up by the hotel shuttle and driven about an hour to the city of Goreme. It was a lot of travelling and we were totally psyched to fall asleep in our cave hotel room. If you know me at all you know I'm obsessed with small spaces and caves and climbing things. This place offers all three, so I'm on cloud 9.

I'm not sure if this piece of basalt chimney stone has a name, but it is cool during the day, and even more awesome lit up at night.

We walked around the city of Goreme today, booked a tour for tomorrow and came across a few lonely planet recommendations. Friends of mine who have been told me this place reminds them of  Bedrock from the Flinstones and they're not wrong. There is even a hotel named after it.

Clay Pots are all over the city!

Talik kebabi - meat, peppers, tomatoes and spices cooked in a clay pot which they also serve it in. The waiter breaks the pot in front of you at the table. Totally melt-in-your-mouth delicious. In fact, we had it twice today.

These archways near our hotel looked so cool lit up at night. It makes it easy for us to find our way around!
Goreme is very catered to tourists, flaunting the things that the region is known for in large stretches of stores and souvenir shops. Near our hotel, there are a few outdoor looms set up, and I imagine you can watch them make the carpets they sell in the summer season.

In general it is a quiet small town, with a winter and summer season. We've just missed their summer season, so a lot of the places seem like their closed, and there are fewer tourists, which I have no complaints about. It is a great place to relax and explore the bizarre landscape. Despite the cold, they keep the rooms and restaurants toasty warm.
